The echoes of your words reach us. Expressions that sum up your doubts, your concerns, your states of anxiety, your unsatisfied curiosity.

 

All the disturbing psychosocial implications combine to distort the views that each of you who, in one way or another, know something about our microsocial network transferred to your solidified star hold about our existence.

 

Today we wish to offer you some clarifications: always receive them with reasonable reserve. Accept them only to the degree that they fit into your intellectual and moral fabric.

 

Although my brothers have addressed some missives in similar terms to other former correspondents of ours residing in different nations, the present text has been written especially for some of our acquaintances in Spain. This original contains some paragraphs of a confidential character for Mr Dionisio Garrido Buendía. We beg him, once they have been removed from the context (marked by means of a green coloured band), to provide the common content to his brother Mr Antonio Ribera Jordá. We have no objection to that content being made accessible to those brothers of yours who are interested in the problem of our residence on Earth and who enjoy your confidence.

 

Friends: In these last months, in some nations and within the social sectors most interested in subjects related to alien biology, a number of public controversies have arisen over our probable existence. Only we are to blame for that limited transfer of information to bodies and brothers of yours hitherto unaware of the matter (information which until recently was confined to a few circles of humans scattered over the European, American and Australian continents).

 

This constitutes one more phase in the sequence of prudent experiments of a psychosocial character that we are carrying out among you to discover to what extent we can make ourselves known without disturbing your terrestrial macrosocial network. The reactions of the mass media, and the experiences of individuals and social strata who gain access through them to that information, generally distorted by the publishers, are carefully analysed by us, and the examination of the results sets the guidelines to be followed in our future strategy of communication with the native civilization. If the reaction to this flow of information reaches a certain threshold level estimated by us as dangerous, we have the means not only to suspend the dispatches -an obviously simple measure- but to neutralize the ferment provoked, by inserting pseudo-informative elements that discredit the versions in circulation. Do not fear, then, that our experiments will disturb your social network.

 

We are studying for the time being the new direction we must give to our dispatches of documentation. We consider that, in the new situation that has arisen, we will in the near future have to suspend the dispatches addressed to Earth people with intellectual training of various degrees, and send them to well-differentiated groups.

 

But, as we indicate to you in later paragraphs, this stance of ours could be interpreted -and such a version might unfortunately even come to have a real basis- as the crystallization of nuclei of embryonic proselytism, sects of a more or less esoteric character that would assimilate our flow of information as -something we vigorously reject from this moment- doctrine.

 

For this reason we see no other way than to offer such informative material only to some organizations (in Spain they could be located in the most important urban centres: Madrid and Barcelona) that have the legal authorization of the Government Administration, whose activities centre on the objective and scientific analysis of problems related to possible intragalactic communications, and whose reliability as regards the dispassionate study of the data accessible to them makes them immune to any dangerous ferment of doctrinaire assimilation.

 

Some of you may think that it would be much more logical to establish a more direct contact with the technical organs of the State. We do not consider it so, for that would constitute an official presentation of our existence, which at this moment we judge premature.

 

If those organizations came to reach a minimum level of functional stability, we would then propose a regime of data exchange since, although it may surprise you, certain kinds of research are more feasible for you than for our small group of brothers, however excellent our technical prospecting equipment may be (for us not only certain information on facts of real content would be valid, but also data corresponding to information verified by you as fraudulent or without genuine basis).

 

Now we wish to set out some of our views for you and to specify some advice which, before accepting it, you must ponder dispassionately and with a critical mind. We therefore beg you to study these comments. We would certainly be glad if your thought came to identify itself with ours in these respects.

 

When one day all you humans of Earth who have known us under various, though inevitably strange, circumstances succeed in compiling and unifying the enormous information poured out by us in these last years, you will no doubt ask yourselves certain questions.

 

A. What were the members of that group who call themselves extraterrestrials aiming at by sending us this informative material?

 

B. Must we accept or reject the version of that identity which they themselves claim?

 

C. To what extent must we admit the genuineness of the data sent, which extend to various sectors of knowledge: speculative thought, historical information on our civilization and our contacts with Earth, science, technology, etc.?

 

D. What legitimate use may we make of those data whose authenticity we are sure of?

 

E. If, despite their warnings, we accept the plausibility of their alien-planetary origin, and in a hypothetical situation in which we had to choose between following their steps, their ideological conceptions, or on the contrary the guidelines and ideas of the men of the earth -our real brothers- what ethical decision must we adopt?

 

F. If we come to admit them as alien-physiological entities, that is, not grafted onto the tree of geological species generated in the terrestrial ecological framework, must we courageously declare this to our close brothers?

 

G. What intentions motivate the members of the microsocial group called “coming from UMMO” during their stay on EARTH in the coming years, and what is the probability that they will manifest themselves in some more visible way, or intervene in some respects to solve some burning problems afflicting our society?

 

H. How do the hypothetical men of UMMO -explorers on our solidified Star- assess the present geopolitical and ideological situation of our humanity, and what phases do they foresee our civilization will have to pass through in the coming years?

 

 

A. The sending of this informative material is conditioned by a complex of motivations of ours which we can reveal to you to a certain degree.

 

The mental habits of the men of EARTH are strongly linked to their socioeconomic structures. The responses of the soma in an individual of your social network obviously obey his education and the habits acquired in the setting in which he lives. This is no secret to the social psychologists of EARTH.

 

We understand that you must find it hard to admit that “someone” can offer a simple piece of information, a technical document for example, without asking for something in exchange, or without trying to mortgage the mental or dynamophysiological freedom of the brother - recipient.

 

Our motivations, however, are conditioned by motives of a different order. They obey in part the practice of ethical norms to which we wish to be faithful. During these last years we have sounded out, with understandable eagerness, all the sources of your culture. Whenever possible we have gained access to your archives and your printed documents; we have recorded visually images of your social life and of your optical-artistic expressions; we have recorded scenes of your folklore or customs; we have analysed, through your scientific publications, the present conceptions of your brother researchers. We have taken the pulse of your social network to investigate its present phase of organization

 

We have recorded a multitude of sound expressions (voice and musical conceptions). All this enormous information, suitably classified and coded, has been recorded modularly in our technical data-recording elements (the information density, evaluated in units familiar to you, is for the titanium crystal memory elements commonly used by us of the following order: 8 . 10¹⁷ to 5, 3 . 10²⁰ bits /cm³ (our coding, however, is not binary but duodecimal, with a physical basis: quantum states of the molecular components of a thermostable crystal of pure titanium).

 

On the other hand, those material structures (painted canvases, sculptures, ceramics, utensils, apparatus, historical vehicles, etc.) whose special artistic or scientific value made them suitable for having their constitution specially recorded, so that their original morphology could be reproduced on our UMMO, have in no way been damaged (See note one).

 

Although in principle the recording of all this stream of information does not constitute plunder according to our ethical principles -since the complex of primary elements that have been copied has in no way been damaged, and its reproduction and subsequent use for artistic purposes and for historiographical and scientific analysis could never mean any harm to its legitimate owners (you) (See note two)- we nevertheless feel obliged to compensate you in some way for that contribution, selected by us without express authorization from the official bodies authorized by the legislation of the various countries in which we have operated. By offering you data on our civilization, even in summary form, we balance, however precariously, our debt to EARTH.

 

But grafted onto this there is indeed another motivation which can certainly be described as self-interested. As we have already explained to you in other preceding messages, one of the most interesting processes of study we pursue with regard to you is the careful analysis of the evolution now taking place in all sectors of turbulent Earth society.

 

Although, as we will explain to you in other paragraphs, it is not lawful for us to distort it seriously, we must logically be interested in seeing what its reactions will be on becoming aware of the real existence of another civilization from far beyond, whose representatives are clandestinely mingled among your brothers, taking advantage of their similar anatomophysiological features.

 

Your controversies in this respect, your resistance to admitting this possibility as valid, as well as the acceptance of our testimony at various levels, are of incalculable value to us -for you-. It can serve us, as we suggested to you earlier, to lay the foundations for possible more direct communication in the future, and in fact it provides us with invaluable elements for studying the mental processes of your neurocortical structures. It constitutes, in your scientific terminology, an indispensable “test” for our psychosocial studies.

 

B. The formulation of a valid answer to this doubt may present to an ill-prepared mentality a paradoxical aspect that is hard to overcome with the semantic elements commonplace on EARTH.

 

On the one hand, from our own perspective, a serious problem presents itself to us: relations with certain persons residing on a strange “planet” which we came to study on 28/3/1950. When at approximately 4 hours 16 minutes and 42 seconds (GMT) our first spaceship landed in a geographical sector close to Spain (near Digne: France), followed within a few Uiw by two other OAWOOLEA­UEUA OEM, we were ignorant of a great many things about you, despite the earlier periods of intra-atmospheric exploration carried out by those pioneering brothers of ours. We did not even know whether your protein molecules might have an enantiomorphic structure different from ours, in which case it would not have been possible for us to mingle among you because of the complex food problems that might have arisen for our brothers, who in that case lacked suitable equipment for synthesizing adequate food.

 

At that time we did not imagine that we would one day decide to establish written and oral links with you, since my brothers' strategy at that time centred on studying your civilization secretly without revealing our presence to you.

 

Having modified the original criteria, we have worked out a new formulation which we have put into practice for some years. The idea was that, in order to avoid a factor of distortion for your social network, communications with some Earth people would be made in such a way that you could not reach a high degree of evidence regarding our real existence. The system had to function by self-correction, with feedback such that, if its response (social spread of our existence) reached limiting levels, it could reintroduce negative regulating factors (refutations, discrediting versions) that would curb the credibility index of the news.

 

The system has worked correctly until now.

 

Although, seen from a social perspective, such control mechanisms are partly explained, there is one aspect that concerns you personally: the attitude that a man of EARTH must adopt, within common logical schemes, towards our testimony.

 

Our respective fields of judgement must be radically different. Naturally, we know that we really exist, that our solidified star is designated by us with a word we could express in the Spanish linguistic code thus: “UMMO” (with an almost mute “U”), and that the versions we have given you -some expressed in simpler and more didactic language when addressed to your brothers of average intellectual training, and others written using a vocabulary familiar to men of science in the few cases in which they were sent to them- are real and not distorted. Although naturally we have carefully omitted many items of information which we judged it inadvisable to reveal to you.

 

But let us try for a moment to put ourselves in your situation: men of EARTH at a cultural stage whose scientific advances have not so far allowed you to make contact by physical means with other civilizations, whose detection instruments have not even recorded the existence of other galactic stars with an ecological environment suitable for the development of biochemical structures, whose Physics has not yet succeeded in interpreting the intimate essence of Space, Time, Matter, Energy... and which must therefore, in sound logic and faithful to its own principles in force, reject the possibility that a spaceship could travel to you from a star situated more than fourteen light-years away. Not even by fantastically approaching the limiting speed.

 

As if these objections were not enough, there is the problem of defence against fraud. All of you are aware that impostors, paranoid pseudologues, and political, religious and financial organizations frequently appear which, using the means of dissemination devised by specialists in mass communication and psychological warfare, instil in ill-prepared minds distorted ideas and versions with unavowable political, economic or ideological motives.

 

This constitutes a danger of an alienating character, which every intelligent and balanced person must try to avoid. There is no other defence against these factors that are traumatizing for the mind than not to accept ANY TESTIMONY FROM OTHERS that is not BACKED by CONVINCING PROOFS.

 

Naturally, the scale of values that establishes the level of certainty of these proofs depends on the degree of intellectual training of the human beings of Earth. For some, a simple telephone call from one of my brothers may constitute an “irrefutable” demonstration of our testimony. A researcher, on the other hand, will call for the systematic compilation of all the data, their orderly comparison, an adequate inspection of one of our spaceships with technical control equipment, the biological analysis of our bodies in search of anatomical singularities that would in some way corroborate our non-native biogenesis, the detailed study of our documents in search of scientific contributions that depart appreciably from the present paths followed by Earth specialists... All these elements of judgement, coordinated with one another, could constitute a broad spectrum of data whose mutual correlations would serve to establish the reliability of our genuine existence.

 

This last way is the one that seems most sensible to us, and according to its results you should establish whether or not our testimony is apocryphal.

 

But we wish to point out to you that this is precisely what we wish: to avoid at all costs, for the time being, offering you such definitive proofs. You already possess, yes, many valuable data that can serve you to work out a plausible hypothesis of our existence. That must suffice for now.

 

Naturally we are not trying to play with you, or to amuse ourselves gleefully watching how you anxiously try to discover the truth without our providing the master pieces that would allow you to solve this “puzzle”. Elsewhere we have justified this strategy to you, and let it be clear that it favours you more than our group.

 

The most consistent stance is therefore to WAIT, prudently protected by a certain degree of scepticism; adopting positions of open criticism towards what might be a gigantic fraud; never making yourselves answerable for the words of strangers whom you have not even been able to deal with directly.

 

All of you must agree that sooner or later, if this is an imposture, we will be unmasked, whether we are mentally disturbed people, a mystical sect, a financial organization, a political party, a group of pranksters, the American C.I.A. or an organization to discredit research on U.F.O.s (you can multiply similar hypotheses to an unsuspected number).

 

But with the same objectivity, we urge you, before passing negative judgements on us, to study our information impartially and carefully. Fragmentary and ill-digested information may encourage you to make statements with excessive and frivolous simplism. Such versions not only cannot harm us but in fact favour our strategy, avoiding excessive spread of the matter. But it seems ignoble to us to let such brothers of yours discredit their own name by exercising their right of criticism unscientifically.

C. During many of these preceding months, writings dictated by us to a few anonymous Earth collaborators, who gladly lent themselves to this task, have reached you. These texts, authenticated with our seal, have also reached men and women of various nationalities, provoking in all of them reactions: of stupefaction in some cases, of slight surprise in many cases, and also frequently of prudent scepticism on becoming aware of our alleged identity.

 

The content of the texts has been very varied. Individually, none of you can yet suspect the informative wealth represented by all the documentary material prepared by my brothers for the men of EARTH. In any case, sooner or later you will succeed in compiling it and will see that on this point too we do not distort the truth.

 

In them we have described to you a broad panorama of our civilization. We have set out before you the bases of our Theodicy; our morality; our thought on the origin and ontological structure of the WAAM (UNIVERSE); our present foundations of Physics; our economic and political structure; our customs and some stages of the History of UMMO. We have shown you some technological advances...

 

And your analysis of them has inevitably provoked impassioned controversies which, when they have exceeded certain limits, we have keenly regretted.

 

We are aware that some of you have been intensely captivated by the cohesion of its documentary components, by the structure of our culture and thought that can be glimpsed through the typewritten paragraphs. Naturally, for any of you immersed in a turbulent society, riddled with social injustices, poorly planned, feeling on your minds the strong tensions generated by the disharmony between the purest ideological conceptions and real practice, with the threat of a holocaust on a planetary scale still weighing on you, and aware of the tremendous difficulties facing you in reaching some kind of equilibrium that would allow the humans of EARTH to evolve more harmoniously, the image of our planet at a more advanced stage and with a social morphology that must seem utopian to you must necessarily evoke fervent desires to imitate it in some cases, and unrestrained admiration in the rest.

 

However, we have carefully filtered all this descriptive material. Note that we use the adjective DESCRIPTIVE and not DEMONSTRATIVE. Because if you go over our writings of a scientific character attentively, you will not easily find data that fully corroborate our existence.

 

It is true that many of the reports sent to specialists contain a rigorous demonstrative basis of a mathematical character, in which we have taken care to use the algorithms and notations familiar to you.

 

But in the writing of all the reports two constant criteria have been taken into account:

 

-) To prevent indications from filtering into their context that would lend excessive reliability to our testimony.

 

-) To prevent certain revelations of ours from being used by you in a transcendent way, thereby altering the natural native evolution of culture.

 

We believe that both measures have an explanation intelligible to you. It is not a matter of proudly denying you the possibility of benefiting from some of our scientific and technical advances. It is that the mere carrying out of this transfer of information would bring with it unsuspected problems that would be very hard to solve.

 

It could be argued that the communication of effective formulas to combat a sarcoma, to synthesize carbohydrates or proteins economically, to eliminate the risks of a nuclear war or to control the genetic code of hereditary characters cannot constitute a negative distortion of the cultural evolution of a social network like that of EARTH.

 

Indeed, if such measures are judged with that simplism, our censorship may even seem monstrous. Only two possible interpretations of our intransigence would then impose themselves: either we are impostors, or we are a cruel and unfeeling race that prefers to watch impassively the spectacle of a Humanity writhing in its birth pangs without at least trying to relieve them.

 

The second judgement would cause us much sadness, as unjust and lacking in calm criticism. You know well that any contribution of a technological character, for example, constitutes an incalculable complex of scientific data.

 

Imagine that you had the idea of giving a semi-savage tribe of the Amazon the formula that would allow them to manufacture autonomously electroencephalographs with which to diagnose epileptic syndromes in the natives. At first sight such an initiative seems praiseworthy.

 

If you think about it a little you will realize the immense difficulties of such an undertaking. How much time would you need to train the natives in mathematics and electronics? And how much to develop an industry that would allow them to manufacture the components? And how could you prevent the most unscrupulous from using the technology of amplifiers, valves or transistors and alloys not only to build electroencephalographs, but to produce weapons and systems that would allow them to subjugate the neighbouring tribes? And even if you chose to go in person to train them, how could you avoid (what has really happened) annihilating the native culture on the pretext that colonizing action is fully justified?

 

But such an absorption of cultures at the interplanetary level would be much more monstrous than the evils that the dominant social network would try to avoid in the phase of domination. You do not take into account the feelings of frustration that would hopelessly alienate all the races of Earth; the disturbances caused by millions of individuals who would rightly rebel against our paternalistic attitude, and who would accuse as traitors those who meekly lent themselves to being subjugated by a foreign culture. This would oblige the travellers, peaceful in principle, to adopt repressive and violent measures to protect their friends. You do not think of the psychic trauma that would affect children and adults on having to replace their principles and factors of judgement with new ones of totally foreign semantic and logical characteristics. And all this with great speed, if the means postulated at the outset are to be obtained promptly.

 

Truly, if you ponder all these arguments you will no doubt add many other drawbacks and will judiciously conclude that our stance is more in keeping with the imperatives of an ethical code that you will doubtless share with us.

 

It is therefore utopian to transplant the socioeconomic norms by which the humanity of UMMO is governed into the capitalist or socialist political framework of EARTH at the present stage. It is dangerous for the scientists of EARTH to assimilate abruptly our present conception of matter or of the quantization of Space and Time without a slow and progressive maturing. It is not feasible to replace your religions with a new mysticism unless it is accompanied simultaneously by conceptual bases of ontology which in turn rest on different scientific interpretations of our cosmos. You will not be able to imbue yourselves with our forms of conduct without acquiring our own semantic instruments, our logic, our forms of expression for the flow of information among the human components of the network.

 

So the value you must grant to our writings will depend on their quality and on the demonstrative elements that back them. When these are purely descriptive and their data expressed in didactic form, the Earth man of science must naturally describe them as worthless paper.

 

Nothing could be further from our intention than to induce you to replace your principles with our ideology. If some of you thought of “converting” by assimilating our philosophy, our ethics and religion, our science, we warn you very seriously from this moment of the folly of your attitude. Naturally you may compare some of your conceptions with ours and mature substantial conclusions; but to reject the whole cultural heritage of EARTH, painfully acquired over thousands of years, in order to replace it suddenly with doctrines whose soundness is necessarily not certain to you, is an experiment that we fervently invite you to repudiate.

 

D. This aspect of our unilateral postal relations may provoke serious doubts and inhibiting attitudes if our advice is not given. Although, as we suggested in the preceding answer, part of our texts are merely narrative, we have sent to certain specialists monographs and studies which in certain cases include the analytical and empirical demonstrations necessary to give validity to the scientific or technical information contained in them. In their development, linguistic instruments familiar to you have been used (logic, vocabulary, physical units, mathematical and chemical nomenclature...), taking care that such revelations, although unknown to you, should be neither so advanced that you could not assimilate them without prior complementary training, nor capable of disturbing the natural evo- lution of the science of EARTH.

 

What have the recipients done with these studies? In some cases, not admitting our identity and practically unaware of the personality of the sender, mysterious to them, they chose to keep these monographic studies, present them as a “curious case” to those close to them and at most use them as a basis for later studies or submit them to empirical verification.

 

Others, also sceptical as to our testimony of being non-native humans, modified the initial wording, annotated some paragraphs with their own comments, and published the works under their own signature in specialized journals and in some textbook, but without mentioning our origin or the name of UMMO.

 

In a few cases their origin was specified, but very vaguely, reasonably taking care not to hint at our claim to come from another inhabited star.

 

Any of these stances seems correct and legitimate to us, although some may be described as “nobler” or more sincere.

 

Bear in mind that it does not harm us in the least for you to use freely information we have offered you without asking anything in return. It cannot affect our interests according to the legal principles you have laid down with regard to property rights. Culture is a common heritage of all human beings, provided individuals are capable of assimilating it. You owe us nothing, nor need you thank us for anything at all.

 

We have only expressly begged you in certain cases not to publicize these reports until a near future. Naturally, if you ignore our request you will not be transgressing any ethical norm, much less should you expect any kind of sanction on our part, although we recognize that our study plans could be harmed. But that is a risk we must inevitably face, trusting in your noble conduct.

 

E. A hypothetical situation in which some of you who consider yourselves our friends had to face the problem of conscience of fighting against us if you wished to be faithful to your legal discipline we consider so unfeasible and improbable that we would prefer not to analyse it, in order to avoid futile mental torment.

 

We possess ample means of defence, so as not to need to go to the extreme of posing such a dramatic dilemma to any of you. But in this respect, moreover, we would be faithful to our principles. If on some hypothetical occasion one of ours fell into the hands of an official social group, mistaken for a criminal or a political agitator for example, although in principle it would be easy for us (should other non-violent technical means of liberation fail) to present ourselves officially to the chancelleries, providing proof of our identity, and even knowing that such a fabulous revelation would suffice to free our brother, you can be sure that we would not resort to it, knowing that such a measure would destroy all the careful protection we have built up so as not to alter the terrestrial social network. We do not mean by this to show you that we are heroic protectors of EARTH. It is simply that such a capitulation is not lawful for us.

 

If one day you found yourselves facing the unpleasant alternative of fighting against us, and the lawfulness of that attack appeared clear according to your own moral and legal principles, you ARE OBLIGED TO BE FAITHFUL TO YOUR OWN LAWS AND NOT TO OURS. On this point the rightness of this criterion is obvious.

 

F. We believe that our particular judgement on your respective behaviour towards your friends and your social and working relations has been made clear in letters of ours sent earlier… what do you gain by trying to convince the sceptics, who on the other hand adopt, as we have told you elsewhere, a very reasonable attitude?

 

For our part, we have no doubt that we will go on belonging to the planet UMMO, even if a great many of your brothers insisted on demonstrating, armed with all their mathematical baggage, that such a cold star does not exist, or that we are in reality a spiritualist sect.

 

In reality it would be more advisable for you to clothe yourselves in a prudent scepticism or distrust before engaging in sterile controversies that can undoubtedly harm your social prestige and even your economic and job stability.

 

G. Unfortunately we cannot offer you a coherent answer to this question. We have our own programmed plans, but they are susceptible to profound modification. Their conditioning factors are the turn taken by the geopolitical and social events of EARTH and the decisions emanating from our HIERARCHY. Some programmes of imminent execution are very confidential, and we sincerely regret not being able to share them with you, since that would cause their instant modification. In 1970 only two brothers will remain in MADRID SPAIN. Many of my fellows will leave for other nations to study their culture at close quarters. At this date only eighty-two brothers remain on this cold star, who will soon be reduced to fewer than sixty by the end of the Spanish summer (September- October). At about that time three of our WOOLEA UEUA (ships) will land at a point not yet determined in Uganda or Ethiopia, and the arrival of two more immediately afterwards is probable.

 

H. In a forthcoming dispatch we wish to set out for you our critical judgement of the social moment of EARTH as assessed by us. No doubt you may be interested in knowing to some degree our thinking about the present stage of the civilization of which you form part.
